Sarah Jane Bentley
Sarah Jane Lowther, born on December 21, 1919, had a humble beginning in Edenton, North Carolina. She was the third oldest amidst her siblings, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. After the unfortunate loss of her mother at an early age, she found refuge under the loving care of her maternal grandmother, Sarah Rodgers, her namesake. Late into her teens, Sarah journeyed to Atlantic City to live with her Uncle William Rodgers and his wife Aunt Teal. Sarah's life took a romantic turn on the famous boardwalk of Atlantic City, where she met her future husband, James Bentley. They united in wedlock in April 1940, ultimately bearing 9 children: 6 girls and 3 boys. With only a 9th-grade education, Sarah was not disadvantaged; she was incredibly curious and a devoted self-learner. She diligently instilled this insatiable thirst for knowledge in her children, fostering their love for reading. Sarah's rule was clear - every Saturday, her children, after completing their chores, were encouraged to visit the library and select a book to read. Through a firm yet loving approach, Sarah Jane Bentley raised her children, emphasizing the importance of giving their best in whatever path they chose and treating everyone with respect. Sarah's spirituality was a guiding force in her life, shaping her actions and serving as the foundation of her moral compass. She remained a dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Church in Atlantic City until her passing on February 8, 2000. Sarah's family will forever cherish her deep affection for hats, which she proudly showcased each Sunday at Bethel Baptist.
